Assignment 4A- Forming An Opportunity Belief
I believe that there is an opportunity to help parents keep track of where their children are when they take them to theme parks. More specifically, when there is a big family group and younger children that the parents need to keep track of in Disney's Magic Kingdom. I believe that with the new wristband that has your ticket programmed into it and is personalized to you, there can be a GPS tracking system put in place to help you locate all of the family members in your party. Alongside the already created app for Disney, this wristband would provide help with knowing where your family members are at all times. There are also different stations throughout the park where you would be able to scan your wristband and check the location of your family. There is an unmet need for parents to keep track of where their children are in a park as big as Magic Kingdom, especially when it's crowded. This is a need specific to parents and even large family groups who have to keep track of multiple young children that become very distracted in this park. Children can very easily get lost at a theme park, they might become distracted by a character or a parade and if the parent isn't 100% attentive the children might slip out of their grip. This need is not new, there are different locations in Magic Kingdom where children go when they get lost. The GPS tracker would just facilitate the process of finding where they are and not having to roam around until they find the lost children location. Disney already has a location where children that get lost have to go to, but this is would be hard to find if the child doesn't know where they are going. Instead, they would be able to scan their wristband and locate their family again. I am about 60% sure that this opportunity exists.
Prototypical Customer: Children as well as parents
Customer #1: Mother of two children 9 and 12
A) Exact nature of the need: I think that a lot of parents experience this to some degree, especially with boys because they are more distracted than girls.
B) How often do you go to Magic Kingdom: It depends, we sometimes go during July and Christmas and other times we don't go at all.
C) How long have you had this need: I've always tried to keep an eye on my children so I wouldn't say its a need I've had.
D) When did you become aware of the need/how are you addressing it: I've always had a slight fear of losing track of my children, the older one has a cellphone so I can communicate with them at all times.
E) How satisfied are you with the solution: If I were to lose my child in the park I think this would be a good idea to have on hand.
Customer #2: Child, Male Age 10
A) Exact nature of the need: I don't pay attention to my parents sometimes I like to walk by myself
B) How often do you go to Magic Kingdom: I go sometimes three or more times during the year
C) How long have you had this need: He wasn't really aware that he had the need for this item
D) When did you become aware of the need/how are you addressing it: He addresses it by memorizing his parent's phone number in case he gets lost
E)How satisfied are you with the solution: I have a place to meet my family if I get lost so not really
Customer #3: Mother of two children 10 and 14
A) Exact nature of the need: I have always had a fear that I will lose my 10-year-old because he suffers from ADHD and he becomes distracted easily
B) How often do you go to Magic Kingdom: My family goes a lot because its an easy vacation spot
C) How long have you had this need: My sister once lost her son at Magic Kingdom so I would say ever since then
D) When did you become aware of the need/how are you addressing it: When my sister lost his son he didn't have a phone, we make our son memorize our phone numbers in case he gets lost. We also make him write it on a piece of paper just in case.
E) How satisfied are you with the solution: I think its a good idea but I don't know how accurate the location would be
Reflection: Talking to all of three customers I got to see different perspectives. I got to speak to a child who would be most likely the one getting lost. He already has a plan in place in case he gets lost so it wouldn't be useful. I think both moms appreciated the tracker more because they know how easy it is for a child to get distracted.
Summary: I think that the original idea is still a good one, however executing it correctly may become a challenge. I do think that the opportunity is still out there for a GPS tracking device for theme parks in case your children get lost. I think that it is more accurate since I started because I took into account what all of my customers said. Entrepreneurs should take into account all of their customers feedback because they are the ones who will be using/ purchasing your product. They should adapt it to fit their customer's needs but also taking into account what they wanted to provide originally.
Wow I really liked this idea for a product. Especially in a state like Florida where there are so many theme parks, I think after working out some details this product could help give parents a feeling of security. I agree with one of the moms that the location could maybe not be the most accurate especially if the child is running around looking for the parents so there would need to be a way to make sure that is super accurate. I like that not only did you get a kid's perspective you also got moms with different age children. I think next however it would be a good idea to get a dad's point of view just to see a different perspective than a mom. Overall though, I do believe that there is a strong opportunity for this product and I think you did a really nice job at looking into this opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI believe there is an opportunity for this idea. A GPS-tracked wristband for kids under 12 that are in theme parks is a good way for the parks themselves charge more for their ticket. Me as a parent would easily pay $10 more per ticket to be able to track where my kids are in those theme parks. That's a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a real problem and there is a real opportunity here. I think a lot of parents would love to have the peace of mind in a big amusement park to know that if their child gets lost, they'll know where they are at all times. I do think you are missing a huge target audience as well though for your potential customers of this product. I know so many teens and young adults that go to large amusement parks with big groups of friends and it is hard to stay with a big group the whole day. I think a friend group would love to have this GPS system too so they always know where there friends are. Sometimes you don't hear your phone or can't check it if you're on a ride so this would always ensure that you could find your friends. Great idea overall though!
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea, sometimes for parents taking their kids to the theme parks isnt always as fun as it seems because plenty of stress and anxiety works their way into their minds. The thoughts of what if something happens to one of my kids or they get lost in the crowds of people. Something like this would take a little weight off the parents shoulders and make the experience more enjoyable for the whole family. I was once a kid and it was never the cool thing to do to walk next to your mom all the time so maybe this invention would allow the kids to be trusted a little more by the parents and allow the parents to still have the peace of mind that they know exactly where there kid is if something does arise. Overall great idea and I would love to see this implemented in our state as there is plenty of opportunity at the various theme parks like you mentioned.
